US Utility Solar Market “Taking Off”

At Solar Power International in Los Angeles today, AltaTerra Research unveiled pre-release excerpts of its forthcoming renewable energy industry study, “Utility Solar: U.S. Market Taking Off.”

The preview reveals top findings from the report, including the following:

1. By the close of 2010, utility customer installations will have seen annual growth of nearly 400 percent, from 65 megawatts (MW) in 2009 to 251 MW in 2010.
2. The utility segment is now about the same size as the commercial segment, but is growing much faster than commercial and residential segments.
3. Of all utility installations, 68 percent are projects of 10 MW or greater.

The full report presents an overview of the development of utility solar in the U.S. with installation data, and profiles and case studies of major projects, including the roles of top industry players such as First Solar, SunPower and juwi solar, Inc.

“The creation of a utility customer base for solar power, more or less overnight, is one of the most important trends in renewable energy in North America,” said Jon Guice, one of the report’s authors and managing director of research at AltaTerra. “It also has important implications for consumers and businesses who want greener energy, and for the technology, finance, construction, and other companies that are building these massive solar farms.”
