The United States Secret Service

The United States Secret Service has several types of jobs available in different areas. According to their website, there are more than 3200 special agents employed, 1300 officers in uniform in other divisions and an additional 2000 in various other offices around the country.

The main purpose of the Secret Service is to protect the nations financial framework and payment organization. They also protect the high-ranking politicians and leader our country. Among other things, they handle security at national events and international conferences and delegations. They work very hard to maintain the safety at national events and functions.

There are different jobs within the Secret Service. One of the most widely known is that of the special agent. Their sole responsibility is protecting the president and other important government officials. They also protect the president and vice presidents families. In order to qualify for a position as a special agent you must have a four year degree or equal specialized experience in the military. Other main requirements are good eyesight and the ability to carry a licensed firearm. They must be able to work long hours and sometimes in less than desirable work conditions. They are always on call and must be available to travel on limited notice.

The uniformed division of the Secret Service provides protection for the home of the Vice President and the White House. The age requirement is 21 years or older and even though a degree is not required, you must have a high school diploma. In addition, you must be able to pass a stringent background check and gain security clearance. For this position, twenty four weeks of training is provided in locations in Georgia and Washington D.C.

There are many student positions and unpaid internships available within the Secret Service. The Student Temporary Employment Program hires teenagers sixteen and older to work during the summer in a full-time position and part-time during the school year. Students must consistently keep their GPA at 2.5 or higher in order to retain employment. Children and family members of current secret service employees do not qualify for this position. College students can participate in the Volunteer Internship program for college credits but there is no pay involved.
