Tokyo-based Spider Labs, Ltd. has released its annual survey of online advertising fraud impacting the Japanese market. From Jan. 1, 2021-June 30, 2021, the company’s flagship product, Spider AF, identified over $4.8 million worth of fraud. In 2020, the advertising market shrank in Japan as a whole due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, with year-over-year advertising spend declining to 88.8% of the previous year.
In April 2021, the Japanese government added Digital Advertising to its Digital Platform Transaction Transparency Act. The act requires that “Specified Digital Platform Providers” improve transparency and fairness in trading on their digital platforms. The transparency of digital advertising, prevalence of ad fraud, asymmetry of information, and tech oligopoly are some of the problems that have led to the development of new standards for digital advertising. In June, the Japan Joint Industry Committee for Digital Advertising Quality & Qualify (JICDAQ) had established business process standards for “Brand Safety” (ensuring the quality of ad placement) and “Invalid Traffic Exclusion” (including Ad fraud). JICDAQ will certify companies that operate businesses which comply with these standards.
“Digital advertising fraud isn’t just about costs driven by fraudulent advertising, it is also detrimental to the entire advertising ecosystem,” said Satoko Ohtsuki, CEO of Spider Labs. “Fraud and invalid data become digital noise, which adds difficulty in evaluating the performance of advertising campaigns and potentially damages a company’s brand.”
