Italy Issues Correction to List of Authorized Food Contact Stainless Steels

On November 14, 2019, Italy issued a press release that announced a correction to certain authorized food contact stainless steels.

The announcement updated the designation for four of the eight newly accepted stainless steels listed in Decree Number 72 of May 9, 2019. That decree expanded the list of accepted stainless steels from 42 to 50 in Annex I of Decree of the Minister of Health of March 21, 1973 – ‘Hygiene rules for packaging, containers and utensils intended to come into contact with foodstuffs or personal use products’ (Ministerial Decree 3.21.1973).

The updated designations relate to:
• Stainless steel with numerical designation 1.4598
• Stainless steels with Unified Numbering System Codes (UNS codes) S82031, S82012 and S31655

Stakeholders should be aware Decree Number 72 of May 9, 2019 also updated the list of unintentionally added elements that are permitted in stainless steels.

The correction came into effect immediately.
